PSMB's favorite, but sometimes a little
overrated in some eyes...
Sword Kirby
What can be said about this power, other than... "sharp!"
Sword is one of Kirby's original powers, and a deadly one. The
sword doesn't have the closest range in the air, but can cut a
good distance in front of Kirby on the ground... and the
hybrid Poppy Bros./Link hat is soo catchy. Sword can slash,
slice, and dice with the best of them... and Kirby Super Star
gives it even more uses. The Sword Beam, downthrust,
multi-stab, and dashing stab are new attacks Kirby has to cut
the baddies own to size. Strangely enough, Kirby needs full
health to pull off a Sword Beam... doesn't work that way for
Meta-Knight, nor for animé Kirby, and HE can do it in the air
also. Sword also cuts slightly behind Kirby in attack,
sometimes coming in handy. Mostly, you'll use this to just
take out what's ahead of you.
Spin Slash isn't as strong as the ground attacks, but it makes
up for that by multi-hitting. I think it's a bit stronger than
the ground multi-stab, but you risk contact against bosses.
It's best used in crowded screens. Otherwise, stick with the
standing slashes.
Use of the sword can sometimes lnd a spare hit in KSS. The
dashing stab lets the blade linger for a second to strike, and
the air slash (not the spin) also does this if you hold "Y"
down. However, except for the Sword Beam, dash, spin slash and
multi-stab, you bounce away after every attack. Sword Kirby
doesn't do this otherwise (KA, Air Ride).
Air Ride makes Sword Kirby a feared force. He attacks whatever
gets near him, and has a three-hit combo that leaves enemies
laying. Nicely done there, HAL... now I'll NEVER beat Checker
Knights. (j/k) The Sword slashes re strog, and a valuable
asset against King Dedede, and in levels like Celestial Valley
and Sky Sands, where the enemies can group sometimes.
Overall, I'd say it's a perfect power, except that it doesn't
have the greatest range sometimes. (Parasol beats it there, as
well as Cutter, Laser, Fire, Ice, etc), and it isn't as strong
as a sword should be. (Parasol's stronger, as are Hammer,
Stone, Spark, Ball). Sword gets a 7.5/10 from me... it's a
good solid power, but sometimes falls short of what you'd
expect of a sword. Still, when the fans come flocking for a
Kirby power, this one lingers at the top of most lists, if not
just under Stone and Hammer.
