Super
Smash Bros. Melee is rated T by the ESRB for comic mischief and
mild violence and is not intended for gamers under the age of
13.
Mushroom Kingdom: Princess
Peach's Castle
Home Arena to:
Peach, Mario, Luigi, Bowser
It's a perfect beautiful day for
battling it out in the Mushroom Kingdom. Peach's castle is
a relatively flat arena, with only a tower in the middle
serving as an obstacle. Switches appear to activate
platforms and ledges during gameplay.
DK Island: Kongo Jungle
Home Arena to:
Donkey Kong
The Kongo Jungle arena is situated at the
end of a fast flowing river, overlooking a waterfall.
Donkey Kong's treehouse is even visible in the background.
The upper platforms make it easy for you to attack your
opponents from below. The rock ledge to the far right of
the arena seems to save many players from falling to their
deaths.
Termina: Great Bay
Home Arena to:
Young Link
The evil moon from Majora's Mask keeps
watch over this arena, but don't worry, it's not going to
crash into the earth. The thing that makes this arena
unique, is that a large part of it is actually giant
turtle… The turtle comes and goes as he pleases, so if you
see him moving, be sure to hop off before he dives under
the water.
Yoshi's Island: Yoshi's Story
Home Arena to:
Yoshi
This super happy arena is just an
island, with some overhead platforms. The only other
obstacle that comes into play, are the floating shyguys
who occasionally fly in and out.
Dream Land: Fountain of Dreams
Home Arena to:
Kirby
This magical arena is a floating
platform in the sky, featuring overhead ledges. All the
colorful background objects can be a bit distracting when
fighting.
Lylat System: Corneria
Home Arena to:
Fox, Falco
A level from the original Smash Bros has
returned. The battle action takes place on the Great Fox,
as it flies over Corneria. Flying Arwings and Wolfens drop
by from time to time. The action tends to be best near the
back of the ship, overlooking the rear thruster.
Infinite Glacier:
Ice Mountain
Home Arena to:
Ice Climbers
This arena is made up of a series of
platforms and ledges. The camera scrolls, so you often
cease fighting to climb up and down, just to prevent
falling off the screen.
Mushroom Kingdom: Rainbow Cruise
Home Arena to:
Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser
The battle starts off on a peaceful
floating ship in the sky. Soon after the beginning of the
match though, the ship begins to sink, and players must
clamber up the ledges to the left. The screen then scrolls
to the right, and eventually returns to the floating ship
where the battle began.
DK Island: Jungle Japes
Home Arena to:
Donkey Kong
The Jungle Japes stage is located in the
heart of Donkey Kong's jungle. Cranky Kong can be seen
inside the cabin, and there's a barrel outhouse on the
left. Watch out for the pits in between the platforms, as
it's easy to miss an attack and end up falling down.
Hyrule: Temple
Home Arena to:
Link,
Zelda, Ganondorf
The Hyrule Temple is a huge floating
palace in the sky. This stage is the largest battle arena,
and it has both an upper and lower level. This is a great
locale for ultimate battles.
Yoshi's Island: Yoshi's Island
Home Arena to:
Yoshi
Super Mario World has returned… Or at
least a small part of it, anyway. Yoshi's island features
the same style of pipes and blocks as in SMW. A seemingly
harmless pit in the middle of the arena can be one of the
most dangerous spots. It's covered with blocks that flip
once they're hit.
Dream Land: Green Greens
Home Arena to:
Kirby
Three floating islands make up the Green
Greens stage. The middle island is home to a giant tree
that blows gusts of wind at players. The spaces between
the islands are covered with blocks that can be broken,
opening up holes where you can fall to your death. Some of
these blocks are bombs, so be careful not to destroy them
if your damage is high, or you could fly out of the arena.
Lylat System: Venom
Home Arena to:Fox, Falco
Just like in the Corneria stage, the
battle takes place while riding on top of the Great Fox.
The ship is now facing the screen, so this time you're
fighting on the ship's wings. Hot lava can be seen below
as the ship flies over the surface of the planet Venom.
Arwings fly in occasionally, just like in the Corneria
stage.
Superflat World: Flat Zone
Home Arena to:Mr. Game &
Watch
To unlock:Complete Classic mode using
Mr. Game & Watch.
This is an arena unlike any other. It's
designed to look like a Game & Watch game. The overhead
platforms appear and disappear, which is about the only
thing to watch out for in this battleground. The only
other hazard, is going off the screen; If you step out of
view, you're not too far away from certain death.
Planet Zebes: Brinstar
Home Arena to:Samus
The Brinstar stage takes place in a dark
cavern, with a hazardous chemical river flowing below.
Keep an eye on the yellow liquid, because it does rise.
When it rises up, be sure that you're on the upper
platforms so you don't get burned.
Eagleland: Onett
Home Arena to:Ness
This stage is located on Ness' home
planet. The best area for attacks is the space between the
two buildings. But that space just happens to be a
highway, where cars travel by occasionally. Get hit with a
car, and you could get KOed if your damage is high enough.
F-Zero Grand Prix: Mute City
Home Arena to:
Captain Falcon
The famous F-Zero track features moving
racing machines that travel by and hit players. When
you're on the platforms, you're safe from being smacked by
racers. Watch out for the alarm, which means it's time to
get back on the platforms; The platforms rise and move up
the track, to another location.
Kanto: Pokémon Stadium
Home Arena to:
Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Pichu,
Mewtwo
This battleground starts off as a flat
field. But it actually transforms back and forth. When it
changes, a windmill springs from the ground, and the arena
switches from a smooth surface to an obstacle filled
fighting zone.
Mushroom Kingdom: Mushroom
Kingdom
Home Arena to:
Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser
It was 1985 when we first visited this
locale. This stage reflects the look of the Mushroom
Kingdom as it appeared in the original Super Mario Bros.
There are bricks to smash, as well as question blocks that
contain items. It's old school Nintendo at it's finest.
Planet Zebes: Brinstar Depths
Home Arena to:Samus
To unlock:Play 50 VS matches.
This is one of the most unique arenas.
The action takes place on a giant rotating surface. If
this isn't enough to throw your game off, you're bound to
be distracted by the giant, three-eyed monster Kraid in
the background.
Eagleland: Fourside
Home Arena to:Ness
To unlock:Play 100 VS
matches.
The action on this arena takes place on
several large skyscrapers. It's easy to misjudge a
landing, and fall between the buildings. A flying saucer
also comes into play, hovering over the skyscrapers. You
can battle it out right on top of the alien craft, until
it decides to disappear.
Kanto Skies: Poké Floats
Home Arena to:Pikachu,
Jigglypuff, Pichu, Mewtwo
To unlock:Play 200 VS matches.
This arena is actually made up of giant,
floating Pokémon characters. You must jump from one
Pokémon to another as the battle progresses.
Mushroom Kingdom: Mushroom
Kingdom II
Home Arena to:Mario, Luigi, Peach
To unlock:Win either the Birdo trophy
or the Pidget trophy.
We have seen a stage from the original
Super Mario Bros, so here is an arena based on Super Mario
Bros 2. The egg spitting lizard Birdo makes a return, and
so does Pidget, flying on his magical carpet.
Special Stages: Battlefield
To unlock:Complete All-Star mode
using any character
There isn't much scenery here, but it's
a nice simple level in which to do battle. The overhead
platforms are good for escaping from opponents, and for
attacking from below.
Special Stages: Final Destination
To unlock:Clear every 1 player Event
Match
The arena where you fight the final
bosses in the 1 Player mode is just a flat battleground.
There aren't any hazards or obstacles to get in the way of
your attacks and projectiles.
Past Stages:
Dreamland
Home Arena to:Kirby
To unlock:Complete 1 Player Target
Test with every character
The first of three hidden arenas based
on levels from Super Smash Bros 64. This version of Dream
Land is a simple floating island, with overhead platforms.
The large tree in the background minds his own business at
first, but blows gusts of winds from time to time, to stir
things up during battle.
Past Stages:
Yoshi's Island
Home Arena to:Yoshi
To unlock:Reach a record 1,323 feet
(400 m) in the Home-run Contest
Another N64 re-incarnation. This version
of Yoshi's island is similar to the Yoshi's Story stage,
except that this one features slanted platforms and
terrain. There are clouds on both sides of the arena,
which come in handy if you get thrown out of the battle.
But don't rely on them - They're constantly disappearing
and re-forming.
Past Stages: Kongo
Jungle
Home Arena to:Donkey Kong
To unlock:Clear the Stadium's 15
Minute Melee with any character.
Donkey Kong's home playground from the
original Smash Bros is back as a hidden stage. There are
palm trees in the background, with rotating platforms for
performing or escaping from attacks. The level itself has
the atmosphere of the original Donkey Kong Country for
SNES. Underneath the stage is a moving barrel cannon, so
if you get tossed off, you might be lucky enough to blast
back into the action.
