Did you know that the creators of the Kirby anime
intended for the show to be a kind of 'life drama'? They wanted it to be a sort
of parody on real life, in addition to being based on the games so it could be
more accessible to a larger audience!
You
probably noticed things like the references to Harry Potter, but did you know
about the references to Chinese history? Or Spanish novels from the
1700's? Or even classic American rock! There's really something for
everyone! Of course, some of the references would make more sense if you
lived in Japan I'm sure (especially the political stuff) but there's also plenty
of references to stuff we'd get!

Movie
- A Japanese movie 'Live' 1952, about a man knows he's going to die in
half a year. He strives to make a park for the people before he dies.
There's a scene where he's sitting on a swing, singing softly. Very
moving.

40: Sheepwrecked
The original title,
and some of Mayor Len's lines in the original
Amon (The rebel sheep)
Movie
Mythology
'The Silence of the
Lambs' 1991
Amon is a reference to Egyptian mythology, where the god Amon was
sometimes represented as a ram. He was later known as Amon Ra, the King of
Gods
It is actually referencing the
Shakespearian play 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.'
It's sort of a pun as
well- the play is 'Manatsu no Yoru no Yume' and the ep title is 'Manatsu no Yoru no Yuurei'
(Yume being 'dream' and Yuurei being 'ghost'.)
(Thanks to Highwayman Johnny for pointing it out)

Moss Burger... Yeah.)

- (Not sure what
Escargon's exact line in the original is)

Boy and Metropolis.
- References to terrorism and the Iraq war

Donkey Kong was too much like King Kong!

Rhapsody
80: Power Ploy
There's a reference
here, but I'm not clear on it yet.
081-
Startling! The Woman Who Doesn't Clean Up
81: A Trashy Tale
Current Events
In Japan, the gender
roles are very strictly defined in their culture. The husband works
outside the home, and the wife stays home and does... Wifey stuff.
In this episode, Sato (Buttercup in the dub)... Well, she's challenging
those roles, like many Japanese woman have started to do!

- 'Iron Chef' of

- The person who does Nagoya's original voice is apparently a very well
known star in Japan! A lot of people were very excited when they heard
about it. I don't know much about him, myself. Maybe dub Kirby will get
some famous people?

088-
Naked Escargon
88: Shell-Shocked!
TV
Dedede makes a
reference in the original to 'Sazae-san' a very popular old anime about a
family.
There is also a scene involving a... rather different version of 'The
Birth of Venus' when Dedede is trying to imagine Escargon without his
shell! This painting here.
Steppenwolf is an old
American rock band- They did 'Born to be Wild' the theme of the movie
'Easy rider'.
091-
Blast run! The Dedede Race - Second Volume
91: Born to be Mild
- The race itself
Movie
Ben Hur, 1925
092- Waddle Dee's Great Food Culture
Revolution
92: Hunger Struck
- The original title,
'Cultural Revolution', the revolution of the Waddle Dees.
- The monster, 'Mou Takusan'
History
This is a reference to
the great Chinese Cultural Revolution, led my Mao Zedong. (Mou Takusan is
a pun on that I suppose.)
It was basically, the right of the proletariat (working class) over the
bourgoues middle class, and one of the many reasons China is so messed up
today. Do some research, it's quite fascinating. (Read the book 'Balzac
and The Little Chinese Seamstress' if you can, it takes place during
that time.
093- Kirby
Appreciation Day!
93: D-Preciation Day
094- Escaped Demon Beast
Phanphan
NOT AIRED
- In the original,
Dedede mentions something about 'Exclusively defensive defense.'
Current Events
In the Japan
constitution, (as written by the US!) they can only have a small army for
defensive purposes. However, some of these 'defense only' forces have been
sent to Iraq, which I believe this is referencing.
095- Devil Kirby!
NOT AIRED
096- Crisis
of the Warp Star - First Volume
50: Air Ride-in-Style Part 1
I believe there are
references to the Iraq War and United Nations in the original, but I can't
quite translate it...
097- Crisis
of the Warp Star - Second Volume
51: Air
Ride-in-Style Part 2
098- Takeoff! Battleship Halberd
Fright to the Finish
- In the original,
Dedede mentions 'Weapons of mass destruction'!
- Dedede gets a cel phone with a camera
Current events
- Iraq again! I guess
the dub won't use this one because they've done it in another episode!
- In Japan, EVERYONE has a cel phone- probably with a camera. They're
way ahead of us there.
Owalt
Desney - Reference to, obviously, Walt Disney. In the anime he's a great
animator (and the creator of 'Mackey' Mouse) who comes to see Dedede's newest
animation- but he turns out to be send from HNM or something.
One
scene has the Cappies suggesting their ideas for a new show... And all their
ideas seem very familiar!
Dedede: 'Gone
With the Wind'. (Frankly my dear, I don't give a Dede-damn? *TANK*)
Some
of the women suggest something very much like 'Charlie's Angels'.
Curio:
'Indiana Curio' - Indiana Jones of course.
Gangu:
A story about some kind of hero toy... Hm, can we say 'Toy Story'?
Kawasaki
- Well, his is a song you've probably never heard of.
Len:
Sheeptaro. - Hamtaro... but... with sheep. =P
