Rainbow Resort was founded by me (KindarSpirit) so many years ago.
It started when we got AOL. My dad told me all these cool things you
could do with webapges, and I was like "Ha, yea right. You keep
your webpages, I'll play videogames." Of course he was right.
One day I was browsing around on the net for things I loved, and Kirby
was one of them.
I was so disappointed that there were so few Kirby sites. That
moment I knew I wanted to make a Kirby site. I played the games
on my game systems, just as I did with the ROMs on my computer (naughty
I know). I knew how to take screenshots from them and make them
as wallpapers (much to my dad's annoyance) and I thought, "Hey
I could put these on the internet."
I began to work on the site on my dad's computer, and I knew instantly
what I wanted to call it - Kirby's Rainbow Resort! It was a level
from Kirby's Adventure, the first Kirby game I played back in 1993.
I loved the level so much, it wasn't hard to decide.
So, I used the aol home page publisher thing way back in 1997 or
so. It was up at http://members.aol.com/Nefermau, but out of frustration
I kept taking it down. AOL removed their publisher thing and I was
so frustrated, because then I had to learn HTML.
A year or so went by, and I just gave up on it. Then, for whatever
reason I tinkered with it and put up a site on xoom. It had three
different xoom urls over a year or so: http://members.xoom.com/Nefermau
(the first one), http://members.xoom.com/xnepenthessx (the second
one), and http://members.xoom.com/rainbowresort (the last one).
It was this URL that opened RR in September 26th, 1999. (So now
you can see, RR was around sometime before 9.26.99 - scary!).
I don't know why I wouldn't stick to one stinkin' URL. I think
it was because I ran out of website space - I can't remember.
Around this time, I met and talked to Gryphon Ten, who is an extremely
talented artist. He gave me so many ideas and help on the site,
I am in his debt to this day.
I also met a guy by the name of Skirbyy (you know I love ya James).
He was so smart mouthed I was intimidated by him. =) He ran one
of the best Kirby sites ever, Kirby
Box. We both became good friends and got up the nerve to ask
Zophar from Zophar.net if he would
host both our Kirby sites.
Surprisingly, Zophar liked our sites and set us up to move immediately!
Rainbow Resort became officially open on Zophar's March 26th, 2000.
However, our days at Zophar's place was numbered. It's a great
community of people, but when Zophar quit the site, I decided it
was time to move again. Somehow RR just didn't quite fit too well
into the emulation scene (it's pretty obvious).
So, I scouted around but I had trouble finding a place where we
would be accepted and fit in. It was a blessing when I stumbled
on a site that I had known so well, but never dreamed of being hosted
under: www.classicgaming.com.
Almost instantly William, who was then running the site but has
since quit, accepted our plea immediately and we opened on December
21st, 2000! It was real exciting. =) He even put a post on the front
page of Classicgaming.com and made us more than welcome.
We've been at Classicgaming.com now for 3 years (almost!) and it
doesn't look like we are moving. =)
RR has had a journey, and it's thanks to all the wonderful people
along the way who have visited, hosted, staffed and posted on the
message board.
