Collaborative Story A Starry Night

When we last left off... (Read the entire preceding post in this storyline, or follow this plot from the beginning.)

Limitless lights lined a night sky. Each pinpoint stuck to the pitch black expanse, gently wavering its soft light in a silent chorus with the stars surrounding. Each blinking beacon cast its beams far and away and down till they reached the surface of another star -- Pop Star. Only this speckled sky was visible, and the partly lit, pallid, placid plains below were just as eventful the lazy night overhead.

Somewhere, amid the black in between, however, something stirred...

Capsule J's situationAuthor #18 - 7:18pm Dec 17th, 2009

Among the many stars in the universe there was one that, unlike most, was unnatural. It was made of metal and held several secrets that only certain species were aware of. This star was not a happy inhabited place like the beloved Popstar, no no. This star was nothing less than a concentration camp made for Capsule J's. Ever since the robotic Capsule J2's appeared they started rounding up the Capsule J's, taking their jet packs, and sending them to this star. Most that had heard of this believed that the Capsule J2's thought they were superior and that this was what fueled their motives, but nobody was sure. What was sure was that nearly all Capsule J's were on this horrible star, and only a few resistances remained.

That's the campfire story Capsule Js circulate these days and, arguably, the best known backstory for the "Great Escape of '08". However, that ain't the whole story. It went like this:

You see, it all started two years ago. It was about that time when the J-2 model was created. The design was the brainchild of one 'Harold C. Johnson' , a rather young Poppy Bro. attending the only school on Popstar, 'N. Erd University'. The model was meant to replace the old, outdated 'Capsule J' model as the latest line in robotic servants. (Everyone wanted one those days) Naturally, the other two scientists were ecstatic. Finally, instead of having to last another day of geeky solitude (broken only by weekly beatings from the local bullys), they were going to be famous.

Well, the model became famous anyways. J2 models sold out quicker than the blink of an eye. However, with many Capsule J models, either out of date or out of fashion, were now obsolete. The Great Dedede III comissioned the scientists to fix the problem they had started, and that's when Harold came up with his famous idea.

"What if we put them to work on some planet or somethin' where they can ... uh, mine... or somethin'. Robots do that, right? "

-Harold C. Johnson

Well, after a few Pep Brews, His Majesty agreed with Harold, and the Capsule J models were sent off to Mekkai ("the only logical place"-Harold) to work in the mines, and later on, some J2 models were sent to Mekkai to 'keep order'. Any rebellions against the new overlords were quickly quelled, and the J2s gained control of the place. Naturally, they weren't too keen on making friends with each other. The J2 model, though submissive to Dreamlanders, knew they were in every way supierior, and didn't try too hard to hide it.

Now, when you're out in space, mining for who-knows-what, and constantly supervised by your literal supieriors, well, it doesn't take long to get a bit antsy. Escaping that non-sensical job was the dream of many Capsule Js, but the J2s were thorough. No spoons, no windows, no toilets (yeah I don't get it either). It was a prison in every sense of the word. More than a few Capsule Js malfunctioned and went insane under the strain. Take for example, Capsule #27, CLYDE.

Now, CLYDE was a strange little guy. Always chatted to whatever was in earshot. Capsule Js, J2s, bricks, rope; anything that didn't resemble the cold walls of his 'bedroom' was talked to until the recipient either ran away or he grew bored of them and left. CLYDE was the by far the least liked person in the mines. With good reason too. He was one creepy fellow. Twitching and lurking, those were his most notable habits. He was avoided by any-and-everyone for his entire stay. Funny. No one thought he would be the one to escape.

the "great" escapeAuthor #18 - 9:58am Jan 9th, 2010

All of the Capsule Js of CLYDE's sector had finished with their work that day and were being told to go back to their "rooms." During the day CLYDE had ended up in a small nook, where a very shiny, though worthless, rock lay. Near the end of the day CLYDE had started talking to the rock, whom he called Randy. When the J2s called everyone back they noticed CLYDE was missing. Having looked around for a good two minuets and being unable to find them they said "good riddance" and decided to leave him wherever he was to, hopefully, die. CLYDE did not die. Instead he left. No guards were there because they knew that everyone, or at least everyone that was cared about, would be in their cells at this time. So, CLYDE was just walking out when he found a ladder. He began to think he was talking to the ladder. Really, he was justing thinking to it, but he didn't really know the difference. Suddenly two J2s came from a corridor. "Hey, you think the boss is going to get angry that we left our posts at the exit?" Said the first who was a green color. "Of course not, nobody can escape, and besides I need a Mr. Goodbar." CLYDE was behind the ladder, and because of this he was not noticed by the J2s. By the time the J2s left for the vending machines CLYDE had gotten bored of the ladder and walked out. Nobody tried to stop him, nobody saw him, nobody even realized, or cared, that he was gone until the next day. The only person that ever cared about his escape was the warden who was simply not happy that anyone, especially a nutcase like CLYDE, was able to escape.
