Super Smash
Bros. Melee is rated T by the ESRB for comic mischief
and mild violence and is not intended for gamers under
the age of 13.
The Regular Match mode is the default
way to test your might to defeat your enemies! On this mode,
you can find other three more modes: Classic, Adventure, and
All-star. Inside them, you must to choose a character (go
to the Characters section for more information about them)
the difficult level (Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, or Very
Hard) and the number of lives (five is the maximum number
of stocks). Then, press Start to begin the match!
Classic
Mode
There are 11 stages that
you must pass through to complete Classic Mode. Luckily,
3 of those stages are bonus stages, where you just earn
extra points and snag trophies. You'll earn a new character
trophy for each different character that you use to
clear Classic Mode.
Stage
1 - The first part of your Classic quest is
a standard one-on-one battle against a random computer
opponent.
Stage
2 - This battle puts a computer player on your
side, as a team against two other computer controlled
characters. As in all battles that feature more than two
combatants, it's a good strategy to keep both of your
opponents on one side of you. But since you have someone
on your side, you can let your teammate fight one of your
foes while you battle the other. You can also stand behind
your teammate, and let them draw the attacks of your opponents.
This way, you can get in some good smashes using your
partner as a shield.
Bonus
1: Break the Targets - Your
first bonus stage features the Stadium's Target Test.
You'll have two minutes to break as many of the ten
targets as you can. You don't need to destroy any of
the targets to continue, since you're just playing for
bonus points in your Classic quest. The bonus stage
ends once you've broken all the targets, fallen off
a ledge, or when the 2 minute timer runs out.
Each character has their
own unique arena for the Target Test. Some are considerably
more challenging than others.
Stage
4 - Another basic one-on-one match awaits you
on this stage.
Stage
5 - In this battle, you'll find yourself teamed
up with two computer controlled players, against one giant
opponent. Your allies will attack your large foe, making
it easy for you to time your powerful attacks.
Bonus
2: Snag the Trophies - Three
random trophies will fall from the sky in this bonus
stage. To snag one of these prizes, you'll have to redirect
it so it falls in the bowl that's in the center of the
stage. Two bumpers are located on the sides of the stage,
and trophies will bounce off of them and into the center
if they're hit with the right force.
Stage
6 - Another battle against just one computer
opponent. Take advantage of the situation, because you're
up against an entire team in your next match..
Stage
7 - You'll have 15 foes (or less) to defeat
in this stage. Only 3 opponents will appear on screen
at any one time though. Lucky for you, each opponent doesn't
have quite as much resistance as usual on the lesser difficulty
levels. You can easily score double and triple KOs with
well placed attacks. This stage is a major challenge during
the harder difficulty levels. Try and take as little damage
as possible, and smash your opponents whenever they're
close to an edge.
Bonus
3: Race to the Finnish - This
bonus stage takes place in an underground tunnel, with
loads and loads of exits. Your bonus stage ends as soon
as you enter one of the many doors. The further you
make it into the maze, the more points you will get.
So, run as fast as you can, and jump into the nearest
exit that you see when the timer's running down.
The amount of time that
you get to find an exit depends on the character you
choose. Some characters are given more time to navigate
this maze than others.
Stage
8 - This stage features a random metal opponent.
They'll always be metal, and won't fly far when hit,
even when their damage is high. Metal characters are
slower than normal, so you can run around and launch
projectiles and items at them.
This fight is always in
the Battlefield arena, so you can attack your opponent
from beneath, using the overhead platforms. Once your
metal foe's damage is high enough, begin fighting them
close to the edges of the arena. Grabbing and throwing
your opponent is another good tactic at this point.
Stage
9 - It's a showdown against the final boss
- Master Hand. Unlike your previous opponents, Master
Hand isn't worn down and KOed. He has a power meter
that decreases with each attack you unleash on him.
Once his power meter reaches zero, he's hit the end
of his career.
Master Hand has a wide
variety of powerful attacks. He gives signs before each
of his attacks though. After you've fought him for a
while, you'll likely be able to predict which attack
he's going to perform next, based on the movements he
makes.
If you chosen as level,
at least, Normal, and you reach to the last stage within
15 minutes, it will appear the Master Hand's left hand,
the Crazy Hand. To appear this hand, you must to hurt
the Master Hand until the HP meter reaches the middle
of it (for example, if you chosen as level Normal, the
HP meter is 300 HP. If the meter reaches 150 HP, the
Crazy Hand will appears). Some moves of the Crazy Hand
are different to the Master Hand. Plus, if the Master
Hand and the Crazy Hand are on the scenario, is possible
that they attack at the same time.
If you defeat the Crazy
Hand, you will get a big Bonus Point, Crazy Hand KO,
with 80,000 pts as prize!
Adventure
Mode
There are
twelve different stages that you must battle your
way through to complete Adventure Mode. You'll earn
a new character trophy for each different character
that you use to clear Adventure Mode.
Stage
1: Mushroom Kingdom - Your quest for adventure
begins in a classic side scrolling adventure in the Mushroom
Kingdom. You'll face Goombas and Koopas, and then a whole
herd of Yoshi's. Once you've passed through the goal line,
you'll have a regular battle match on Peach's Castle
As you travel through the
Mushroom Kingdom, you'll encounter numerous Goombas
and Koopas. You don't need to defeat any of them, but
you score points for every foe that you take out.
Eventually, you'll reach
this platform where you must battle ten Yoshis. Each
Yoshi can be KOed when they have fairly low damage.
Powerful smash attacks are best to clear out these little
dinos. If your character has a spinning move (such as
Mario, DK, Link, or Samus), it's also an effective way
to dispose of the herd of Yoshis.
At the end of the level
is a goal flag, just like in the original Super Mario
Bros. If you cross the goal line with a 2 on the seconds
of the timer (ex: 3:12), you'll face Luigi in the next
battle instead of Mario.
The final battle in the
Mushroom Kingdom takes place on Princess Peach's Castle.
Your opponents are Peach and Mario (or Luigi if you
finished the previous stage with a '2' on the seconds
timer).
Stage
2: Kongo Jungle - This stage is more fun than
a barrel of monkeys… In your first match, you'll
face two small Donkey Kongs in the Kongo Jungle. Following
that match, you'll go up against a giant Donkey Kong in
the Jungle Japes battleground.
These
small Kongs aren't nearly as strong as a full sized
ape. They're knocked around quite easily. A few good
strong attacks is usually enough to take care of them.
If you get right up close to giant Donkey Kong, many
of his attacks won't be able to reach you. He's often
a tough customer, and can take a lot of punishment before
getting KOed. Your best bet is to perform quicker attacks
to wear him down, and then finish him off with a stronger
smash move.
Stage
3: Underground Maze - The Underground Maze resembles
a dungeon level from Zelda. Your quest is to locate the
legendary Triforce. Once you've cleared the maze portion,
you'll fight against Princess Zelda on the Hyrule Temple.
The object here
is to collect the legendary Triforce. It's hidden randomly
in one of six rooms. The other five rooms have the Master
Sword. When you touch the ground in one of these Master
Sword rooms, Link will appear to challenge you. You
can actually pass through a room without fighting Link…
If you can manage to triple jump through it and not
touch the ground, you won't have to fight Link. One
of the six rooms will contain the Triforce. Just walk
onto the platform and claim the prize.
If you are brave, and you
fight against the five Links of each room, you will
get a good Bonus Point, Link Master, with 30,000 pts
as prize!
Now you face off against
Princess Zelda. It's a standard one-on-one match, without
any twists or surprises.
Stage
4: Brinstar - Welcome to Planet Zebes. You have
to deal with Samus, and then make an escape before the
entire planet explodes.
Your
next match takes place against Samus Aran, star of Metroid.
Beware of the rising and falling acid below the arena.
It can catch you off guard if you aren't paying attention.
There's a time limit on
your escape. Use double and triple jumps to work your
way upwards on the platforms until you reach the top.
If you don't make it to the highest point before time
runs out, you'll lose a life.
Stage
5: Green Greens - Off to another planet you
go. This time, it's to the planet Pop Star, the home of
the little puffball known as Kirby.
A
single Kirby is your opponent for your first fight,
in a standard Smash Bros battle.
Now you face a whole team of Kirbys. Each one of them
has stolen a special move from other characters in the
game. This adds just a slight twist to the match, but
it's still a normal fight. Try not to get surrounded
by the noisy Kirby characters, and use powerful attacks
to send them into orbit.
If you defeat the single
Kirby and the whole team of Kirbys within 1 minute,
a giant Kirby will appear! Knock out it, and you will
get a Bonus Point, Giant Kirby KO, with 10,000 pts as
prize!
Stage
6: Corneria - It's off to the Lylat System,
where the StarFox team is waiting for you…
Fox McCloud is your only
opponent in both of your matches here in Corneria. In
the first match, it's a fair fight between you and hum…
The remaining members of
the StarFox team will be buzzing around the Great Fox
in their Arwings for your second battle. Lucky for you
they have terrible aim, and will shoot at Fox the same
as they shoot at you. Try to end this one quickly, to
avoid prolonged exposure to Arwing attacks. If you have
unlocked Falco, on the second battle, he will be your
opponent instead of Fox, but he appears randomly. So,
you have a 50% chance on: you fight against Fox, or
you must to fight against Falco.
Stage
7: Corneria - Welcome to Pokemon Stadium. You're
not here to observe these little critters though, you're
here to get down to business - Annihilating every Pokemon
that stands in your way.
You'll
have a number of Pikachus and Jigglypuffs to defeat
in your first match. Pokeballs are aplenty here. Try
to grab and use as many Pokeballs as you can. This prevents
them from being used against you. They also make excellent
projectiles. Smacking a Pokemon in the head with a Pokeball.
What sweet justice…
Stage
8: F-Zero Grandprix - It's a day at the races.
Too bad you're not here just to enjoy yourself. Just make
sure that you don't fall victim to the lethal F-Zero racing
machines, or speedster Captain Falcon.
You
start off running on a nice smooth racetrack. But not
for long. Whenever you see the warning !
Exclamation mark flash, be sure to find a high spot
to hide. The F-Zero racing machines will cruise down
the straightaway, and run over anything that's in their
path. From a safe perch, you can observe these furious
racing vehicles as they blow by at insane speeds.
If you want to get some
many bonus points, try to don't make a third jump while
you jump from one platform to another, and you will
get the Switzerland Bonus Point, with 12,000 pts as
prize!
Now's your chance to get
even with those mad machines that tried to run you over…
Well, get even with one of those drivers, anyway. Speedy
Captain Falcon can be tough to hit, but takes damage
easily when you're on the offensive. Put and end to
his racing days by giving him the ol' KO.
Stage
9: Onett - The home planet of the homerun hitting
Ness. The music and scenery may seem all happy and friendly,
but you'll find that the situation is… different.
Three Ness characters are
here to challenge you for this match. Try to keep them
all to one side as often as possible, to avoid being
attacked from behind. Also beware of the speeding vehicles
that travel on the bottom level of the arena.
Stage
10: Ice Mountain - You begin at the bottom of
the mountain, as the camera scrolls upward. You'll encounter
a few Topi creatures as well as Polar Bears.
Once
you reach the top, you'll do battle with two pairs of
Ice Climbers. Their light weights make them quite easy
to knock off the screen with your powerful attacks.
Stage
11: Battlefield - The end is near… But
first you must clear the Battlefield stage. The gravity
is quite low here, and a single jump can send you soaring
quite high.
Your
first match is against a team of wire frame characters.
Up to five of them will appear on screen at one time.
You will no doubt be swarmed, so keep moving to make
yourself a harder target to hit.
Now you have a metal battle,
against the Metal Mario Bros (only appears if you have
unlocked Luigi. If you haven't unlocked this character,
you will fight only against Mario). These two can be
a challenge on higher difficulty levels. They seem unusually
quick for solid chunks of metal, but their weakness
is that they can't recover as far when hit. But at the
same time, it's harder to get them to fly far because
of their weight.
Stage
12: Final Destination - Big Bad Bowser is your
final opponent for Adventure mode. He's bigger than normal
Bowser, but lucky for you, he's still lacking in the speed
department.
Bowser
will slash and rip you if you get close. So, you're
better off using projectile attacks. Whenever an item
appears, it should be easy for you to outrun Bowser
and use the item at him.
Once Bowser's damage meter
is high enough, a good smash attack will be enough to
send him flying off the stage.
If you chosen as level,
at least, Normal, and you defeat Bowser within 30 seconds,
a new boss will appear, Giga Bowser. This last boss
is too huge, and too hard to defeat. If you KO Giga
Bowser, you will end the Adventure Mode with a big Bonus
Point as reward, Giga Bowser KO, with 100,000 pts as
prize!
All-star
Mode
This
mode is unlockeable if you unlock every secret character.
You'll earn a new character trophy for each different
character that you use to clear All-star Mode.
After
unlocking every secret character, All-Star mode will be
available in the 1 Player menu. In All-Star mode, you
must defeat all 25 characters using a single life. If
you get KOed even once, it's game over. Your next opponent
is visible in the background photo between battles. Also
in the background, are the trophies of the characters
that you've already eliminated.
Luckily, you have 3 heart containers
that you can pick up after any battle. Use the heart
containers wisely though, as you don't want to waste
your powerups too early. Your damage meter is extremely
important, so be sure that you're the one dishing out
the attacks instead of receiving them. It's a good strategy
to only pick up one of those heart containers when you've
taken a very high amount of damage. Be warned though,
that the higher your damage is, the easier it is for
you to be KOed. You'll have 24 characters to fight through
before you face Mr. Game & Watch.
The 25 characters that you battle are
spread out over 13 matches. In the first four matches,
you'll battle only a single opponent. In the next four,
you'll have to face two foes at a time. The four matches
following that feature 3 opponents in each battle. The
13th battle puts you against a total of 25 Mr. Game
& Watch characters.
The 12 matches before Mr. Game &
Watch feature random characters in various arenas. The
character order is set at the beginning, so you can
see which characters you fight, and in which order they
appear, between each battle. Each character you face
in All-star mode is wearing different threads than usual.
Matches 1 to 4 - One
foe at a time is the way the first four matches are
set up. Don't let yourself take much damage in the first
few fights, otherwise the later battles could be a problem.
Matches 5 to 8 - Two
on one is the situation here. Lucky you - you're the
one fighting by yourself. Dish out attacks, and keep
an eye on your opponents' damage meters. When one of
them is at a high damage, smash them out of the arena.
Matches 9 to 12 - Now
you have three computer opponents to deal with. If possible,
Try to keep all your foes on one side, so you can't
be attacked from behind. By glancing at your opponents'
damage meters, you can tell when one of them is ready
to be KOed.
Match 13 - The final
battle always takes place in Flat Zone, against 25 Mr.
Game & Watch characters. It's best to be a Speed
Demon, and clear the stage as quick as possible. It's
extremely easy to get thrown out of the sides of the
arena, so don't leave yourself vulnerable.
