Ask Guru Gobbo #121

Well, I just missed all the dyed alcohol and I'm a little early for the blooming. This sure is a three day span of "Why now?". Interesting factoid, Samus Kirby dropped a bunch of Qs on me, but since it was over five days, I didn't even notice. Okay, that's a lie. It wasn't interesting.

Do you know where Meta Knight's eye changing thingmober origniated from in the anime? Is it just a cliche or were they taking the idea from Gollum's apperance in The Hobbit, when his eyes changed because of his emotion? Or was it a cliche that originated from the latter possibility? Thank you very much!

- Samus Kirby

Squeaky Bogg

Meta Knight's multi-chromatic eyes are certainly not seeded from Gollum. I don't really know why that preciousss character would be chosen to rob the trait from. No, eye hue shiftery is a standard way-lame practice done by most any Mary Sue. And, when you get down to it, Meta Knight is a big, stinkin', canon cliché. Give 'im a sweater an' call 'im Wesley, Butler-tron. Triple reference score: 1,000pts!

Personal vendetta aside, there's a reason his eyes roam the spectrum, which more poorly thought out characters can't claim to their defense. Meta Knight wears a mask; hence, no emotion can be read upon his face. A character who can't display emotion is very hard to relate to. People read facial twitches and contortions even when on an animated figure. Since Meta Knight's face is blocked, his eyes become further windows to his soul.

Would you consider Kirby and the Amazing Mirror and Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventure to be like sister games? Both were released at just about the same time, and involve the main character being split into four different colored copies of himself. It seems like the producers had basically one idea for a game, but decided to split it into two different games, in two different franchises.

- Zombom

Minch

Saying that these two games were attached at the hip would be like saying that touch screen games on the DS are all in the same boat. Okay, so that's hyperbole. Anyhoo, this was actually part of a wave of inter-connected babies heralded at E3 2003. Then, the two demoed games were the Zelda title and a Tetris game.

Nintendo does these waves periodically. They try to push through a new feature and make a bunch of games try to use it. Normally, this is done with some new control device, like a gun or so, and gets quickly forgotten. They try to flex a new muscle and hope that game developers bite onto the idea. When this was an additional feature, normally little companies take the bait. How many games are there that use those guns, after all, throughout all systems? When the new feature is ingrained into the system, however, as it is with DS and Wii, developers are more inclined to use it.

Anyhoo, so this four-player connection in these titles wasn't so much "sister" games as it was one in a heard. Nintendo wanted to have their four-player connectivity really hit it off. The list of Game Boy Advance games that support the cable tell a quick story with '03 and '04 included in their titles.

Does kirby have bones?

- King Meta Dee

Squeaky Bogg

I thought I had something to this effect answered before, and with the ever-growing stretch of Repeat Responses I have this time 'round, I was sure it would be another drop in the bucket. Turns out, I can't find it. Who knew?

Anyhoo, it wouldn't be believable that Kirby would have any type of skeletal structure, given his amorphic form. He seems more like a mollusk than a vertebrate. While at that, I don't even think he has any real type of muscle structure. He's pretty biologically unbelievable. He's suppose to be light as air, at that, which may mean that Pop Star has a very dense atmosphere or he simply breaks physics. Guess what? He isn't real. He doesn't have bones, muscles, skin, cells, or even a body. His fictional and not real. This is apples to metaphysical oranges. The two aren't even in the same plane of existence.

Hello again! My friend is trying out the Kirby series for the first time (yay!) and he wants to know what title would be the most fun for a Mario fan. And/or what title would give him the best Kirby experience. Thank you!

- Samus Kirby

Squeaky Bogg

Since Mario is a level based progression game, I would think something more episodic would be a good go-between. Squeak Squad has compartmentalized levels to it, right? That's a newer and more accessible title to get hands on. Next to that, I'd think Adventure/Nightmare in Dream Land has some good long, stretches of levels to spelunk through. I'm just assuming they started off with the latest, Ultra.

1: if you had all the makers of kirby, everyone who designed all the characters, levels, anything, in one room, what would you ask them? i would ask them what are the eyes 02 has when he just shows up which look like a smiley face and what was the real relationship between meta-knight and kirby

thanks,

- Poppy Bros Max

Squeaky Bogg

Do you need it numbered when it's by itself? What are you setting this question apart from? Anyhoo, no, I wouldn't ask that. I know that Meta Knight is simply the antipode antagonist whose mystique lies in his shroud of mystery. They don't have an answer for that. It's just there to intrigue. Then, I don't really care about 0², either. His false face is for false security. You don't don't know what you're getting into, and seeing a big, white angel thing is comforting until oh snap! That's Zero!

The big Q on my mind would be what ever happened to Shinichi Shimomura and all his contributions to the Kirby universe? Those are true unknowns in this world.

I had submitted a Knight for the IF, and I was wondering, may I revise the Knight's decription based upon your critique? Because I misunderstood the rules and thought it was supposed to be like a mini-boss, not just a normal enemy, so I would remove the whole 'repeat 3 times' bit.

- Samus Kirby

Squeaky Bogg

What part, exactly, makes people misinterpret the contest to be anything but a regular enemy? The language is all clear on what the stock is suppose to be: "worthy warriors to pad out the ranks", "Note that it is a Meta Knight, not the", and, the biggest hint of them all, Guideline #1: "The most important thing about the submission, a plain ol' enemy knight is being created [...] like one in Meta Knight's army." It couldn't be much more clear than how it further goes on to explain it in the submission guidelines. The underlying question of the contest is "If you could make a Meta Knight...", and if one recognizes the Meta Knights as multi-star shot to-be-killed foes, they really need to bone up on their Kirby games. And, who can forget this gem: "It should be believably in the game as a regular enemy, and not mistaken for a mini-boss (that's all in the rules, folks)."

So, really, I don't think I could make it any more clear. I could see why one may think that, since so many of the entries apparently ignore that rule. Which, well, is why I put that latter statement right above those entries. I mean, I innocently assume that one would read the guidelines, look at the current entries, and vote upon them to get the behind-the-scenes commentary before putting their pony in the race. There's a good number that I've laid the "too much like a mini-boss" on. But, that's just how I'd think things would go down. I might be crazy, tho', since that's a logical progression of thought, and experience has taught me time and again that people obviously don't do that. Isn't that right, guy who made me stay four hours late at work since he was too stupid to read the instruction manual about the device he was trying to install for either set-up or troubleshooting which both gave the same two minute solution? Latent rage!

As for changes, I've been wondering why this question has been coming up. I mean, I had it blatantly written on the Received page that the submitted entries could have vital changes made to them upon request, such as more clarified info or pictures (if I missed them), through any means of contact. Then, I realized this statement only appeared at Super Star Treatment and not Round Knight Recruitment. Of course, people can't assume one works for the other. Prolly should get a general Interactive Fandom FAQ up to lighten this repeated questionary bombardment.

Greetings, Uncle Gobbo.

I've been wondering something for a while now. I seem to recall an enemy found in the VS. mode in Kirby's Dream Course that, when defeated, grants the Mix ability. My memory's kind of foggy on the matter, but I seem to recall him resembling a spinning cylinder.

No matter where I look, I can't seem to find anything on the little baddie. No names, no pictures, nothing at all. I clearly recall him appearing in Dream Course, but, like I said, only in the multiplayer mode.

Being the classic Kirby wiz that you are, do you have any idea what this little guy might be called?

- A Waddle Doo With A Hat

Squeaky Bogg

Transformer! More than meets the eye!

Okay, I literally just put that article up there. The dude-face is named such, Transformer, or Changer in Japan. Truthfully, it's odd how little information about this guy exists. It's not like he's some horribly obscure entity. He was featured, labeled, and explained in the Dream Course Instruction Manual. Despite this, it's as though the li'l feller never existed -- even to this site!

You're correct, however, about the revolving cylinder only being in the two player mode of play. He was a one-time character who appeared in an optional mode of a game that a lot of people didn't even play. He may be in our minds more than others since we played the VS. Mode. I don't think many people delved into the competitive putt-putt much and, therefore, never really felt it worth listing in any source, assuming they even knew about him. You work with what you know, and I know two player mode well. I spent many hours racking up strokes while trying to do nothing more than crush my brother under some Stone. Good times.

I always remember this guy, and have been meaning to get something actually about him out there so people could say, "The legends are true!" This is just the kick in the pants I needed to get it out there for once. Why, I was suppose to use him in the Mini-Boss Making Mayhem contest to serve as a Mix granting boss. However, I then decided to greatly hold back on my examples as to not make any wary about having such sparks of genius.

I have questions about the recent Interactive Fandom, 'Super Star treatment.'

Are you requesting us to revive long-forgotten powers from old kirby games, or are you asking for completely new powers to go with SS's theme?

- Bloon

Bloon

As is detailed in the section's Guidelines, while it's meant to be abilities that got shafted from appearing in Super Star, newer abilities aren't prohibited. This is why Animal and Metal, I believe, appears in the page of received submissions. Again, as told in the guidelines, something like Magic or Smash already has a wider range of applications and uses. A newer ability like, say, Bubble, was basically a "hit the button, one thing happens" type of power. That's the type looking to be built on. But, whether it comes from the past or the future, all is good... so long as it wasn't already given various means of use.

When are you guys going to work on the brawl page?

- Dodongox

Squeaky Bogg

Aren't there other Super Smash Bros. sections that haven't even been finished, either? There's still pages out on Canvas Curse and some of the original Super Star pages just got wrapped up. Brawl, on top of being new, is barely a Kirby game as much as it is a game that features Kirby.

Translation: I don't play Brawl, I don't know Brawl, I don't care about Brawl, and I don't know who even updates pages around here even more. Doing such has been on the agenda for the staff, probably for too long. Frankly, I see it that there's whole sites dedicated to Super Smash Bros. if not Brawl in general. Ol' RR is spreading itself too thin, is the way I see it. The Smash Wiki is basically where I go to get all the answers to my SSBBQs. Mmm, S.S. barbecue... I don't know what that is, but it sounds fantastic!

Repeat Response:

  1. Daniel wondered if Kirby Wii's graphics would be Game Cube's.
  2. Blade Scares Me asked about Blade Knight's eyes.
  3. Airride_Master inquired to my favorite non-Kirby game.
  4. Squeaky Bot wanted to know why King Dedede hates Kirby.
  5. Leirin asked if Ivyna J. gave up Kirby fandom.
  6. Game Qube wondered why Marx transformed with his wish.
  7. Some Random Person questioned Kirby, breathing, and space travel.
  8. Halftoothbob asked Kirby's size.

I think I blew out the Repeat Response. She's not meant to hold such levels.
